The biggest challenge that we are currently facing in Clovis is "low-income" versus "affordable" housing. Many people are framing our current, mandated housing requirement as a need for “low income" housing, but what Clovis actually needs is housing that is affordable-affordable for young adults and working families. It has become very difficult for college students and new graduates to afford to live independently. These are young professionals who want to move to or come back home to Clovis. We also need to draw working families to Clovis. That will only happen if we provide affordable housing options. Many families are working very hard to be able to put their children into Clovis schools. The “Clovis Way of Life” should be attainable for anyone who wants to share it.
Many current residents are wary of new development in or next to their existing neighborhoods. That should be respected. New development should enhance existing communities and not interfere with them. Neighborhood safety is paramount when planning for future development and continued positive growth. Understanding increased traffic volume and its effect on the condition and maintenance of our roadways, pedestrian trails and bike routes are essential to the continued safety of our community.
Many Clovis residents have voiced their concern about transportation. Our community wants and deserves safer roads, less traffic congestion, and a more robust, user-friendly public transit system. Measure C has been essential in funding many of the recent projects but is expiring in 2027. The state has stepped in, and the replacement, Measure S, Better Roads, Safe Streets, will be in the hands of the voters this November. We need to use these funds to continue improvements to our streets, public transit system, and trails.
As your City Council District 5 Representative, I will be your ear, your voice, and your workhorse to ensure that Clovis remains a safe, thriving, and desirable place to call home. As a Clovis resident, just like you, I want our community to be a place where everyone is proud to call home.
